For a long time now, I’ve always wondered why they don’t make more of those ‘beat’em up’ video games like they used to back in the 90s, like TMNT the arcade, Double Dragon, Streets of Rage. These games are simply the best when you get a group of friends together, beating up thugs, destroying fire hoses, and spending lots of quarters trying to beat that mutated rhinoceros boss guy.

Luckily for you, if you weren’t a gamer in the 90s, or have missed those games as much as I have, Castle Crashers brings back all the joys of an old school beat’em up game with lots of new welcomed additions like RPG like leveling, weapon swapping, HD!!!, hip battle music, and boss fights that totally take it to the next level (seriously, have you ever fought a CATSHARK before? Really, a CATSHARK…you’ll have to play to know what I mean). JMan and I got owned pretty bad quick, but Jeff and Matt ended up carrying the torch and vanquishing the evil CATSHARK.
Button mashing is fun too but…there has to be a chivalrous honorable goal for all of it – what better than to save the princess from evil doers? So after my friends and I get to the first princess and save her.. the level seems to have stopped? We are running around asking ourselves “now what?”
Rule 1: If you don’t know what to do, starting mashing buttons – and before we knew it, we were fighting each other after the boss fight, for who gets the princess! That made my day, even if I was the first to get clobbered.
XBOX Live (about $9.99 download) my friends, try this one out with your friends for a little getwaway into the past, and plenty of memories to talk about…like your CATSHARK fight

Comment by VancityAllie November 17, 2008 @ 4:34 pmThis is indeed a simplictic yet fun game that harkens back to the good old days at the arcade playing TMNT. Proof that you don’t have to do anything elaborate to make a fun game… something recent TMNT outings don’t seem to comprehend.
